Educational & Clinical Supervisors

Bolton GP Trainers Group is a peer support and development group for GP Trainers and GPs interested in becoming trainers. It is chaired and convened by Dr Reuban Pratheepan r.pratheepan@nhs.net. Meetings are currently held over MS Teams.

September 4th 2024 (WEDNESDAY): Dr Laura Pogue delivered an interactive session on Supporting trainees with the AKT. The Pennine padlet AKT resource was introduced. Dr Reuban Pratheepan delivered an CAT (Care assessment tools) update.

July 3rd 2024 (WEDNESDAY): Dr Roy Wallworth delivered a conversational skills masterclass. This was followed by a COT calibration exercise with Dr Reuban Pratheepan.

May 15th 2024 (WEDNESDAY): Dr Ian Hamer delivered an interactive session on ARCP: Support for educators followed. Dr Haroon Pardes from BARDOC then followed up with a discussion highlighting the issue of trainee DNAs at BARDOC OOH sessions.

April 25th 2024 (THURSDAY): Paul Allerston – solicitor and Dr Waugh – Bolton Chief medical examiner delivered a joint afternoon talk around supporting GP trainees with coroners’ inquests as well as the new medical examiner role.

February 27th 2024 (TUESDAY): Dr Rebecca Wagstaff- Head of school for Public health spoke to primary and secondary care CSs about the Enhance programme for FY doctors, with the aim of exposing them to generalist skills.

February 1st 2024 (THURSDAY): A special event was held at the Octagon theatre in Bolton. Chris Lewis from the Bolton GP Training Hub ran a coaching and mentoring masterclass in the morning. Dr Manu Jeyam delivered a session on Developing Resilience followed by a group discussion around issues experienced as trainers.

January 19th 2024 (FRIDAY): Lucie Griffiths- Differential Attainment champion talked about her current role supporting GP trainees that included a case study and group discussion around options to support trainees in difficulty.

November 16th 2023 (THURSDAY): Trainers’ day held at The University of Bolton, School of Medicine. Professor Iqbal Singh CBE and Dr Helen Wall discussed plans to establish the undergraduate medical school. Dr Allison Rees NW AD- For Differential Attainment delivered a presentation about Supporting international medical graduates at risk of differential attainment where links to podcasts to support IMG trainees were signposted. Dr Reuban Pratheepan then presented a talk on The SCA: Clinical Complexity Domain.

September 27th 2023 (WEDNESDAY): Ian Hamer, RCGP Examiner gave an up to date appraisal of the upcoming new exam format in the SCA: As it stands. This was followed by Reuban Pratheepan giving a presentation relating to guidance on GP Post Timetables.

September 14th 2023 (THURSDAY): Roy Wallworth, retired Associate Dean hosted Transformational teaching masterclass.

July 19th 2023 (WEDNESDAY): Reuban Pratheepan discussed the new SCA Exam in SCA- What we know so far.

This was followed by an SCA calibration exercise using the adapted SCA RAG tool.

April 13th 2023 (THURSDAY): Dr Raj Khiroya attended the Trainers’ group meeting to discuss the SRTT programme.

March 22nd 2023 (WEDNESDAY) Trainers’ day: Nick Walton Associate Dean delivered an interactive discussion on the recently updated Trainer Reaccreditation process. There then followed a RCA Calibration exercise followed by a presentation delivered by Reuban Pratheepan on How to Support Trainees. After lunch Dr Hannah Cappleman delivered a session on ‘Why do people think GPs are lazy’.

January 25th 2023 (WEDNESDAY): Ruth McCann Assistant HR Business partner at STHK Lead employer came to talk about the leave arrangements for trainees as well as support offered by the HR Advisory team. Nicola Layton, the new Bolton training programme administrator was introduced to the group. Improving trainees’ attendance at OOH sessions was discussed with a view to highlighting this at induction and the group was reminded about the upcoming local trainer CPD sessions.

September 27th 2022 (TUESDAY): Mary Cheshire & Rob Harris discussed the GM Training NHSE GP Fellowship programme:- GM Training NHSE GP Fellowship programme. Reuban Pratheepan presented a CPD exercise detailing the difference between PDPs and Agreed action plans:- Agreed Action plans Vs PDPs and Seb Pillon introduced the group to the locally developed RCA calibration tool (RCA SOX Resources above).

May 24th 2022 (TUESDAY): Mohan Kumar (Wigan AD) introduced the trainers’ group to the GM TALC resource and the concept of TALC trainers and local RCA SOX mentors. Teaching and Learning Consultation Skills (TALC) resource
