The Surgery

Hightown Surgery is a thriving practice in purpose-built premises opposite the Horton Hospital. We pride ourselves in our friendliness, high quality care, practice management and resilience in the ever-changing world of general practice. We have a list size of approximately 11800, serving Banbury and surrounding villages. We have a diverse demographic mix of patients’ ages and ethnicities, with a significant number with English as a second language. This gives trainees a breadth of clinical and psychosocial experience, equipping them well for exams and their future careers. We always score highly on patient satisfaction surveys (except for car parking!) and enjoy popularity as a practice within the area.

Hightown is an innovative Practice, amongst the first locally to employ non-dispensing Practice Pharmacists, and leading within our Primary Care Network to develop new roles and care models. We’ve responded quickly to the changes brought on by COVID-19, adopting to allow clinicians and admin to work from home when needed, and providing a well-managed vaccination centre for our own patients and those from another Practice.

In addition to the traditional medical and managerial teams, we also employ MIND wellbeing workers, Social Prescribers, a Musculoskeletal specialist, and offer shared care for addiction with Turning Point. We work closely with community teams from District Nursing, Primary Care Visiting Service, Hospital at Home, Care Home Support Services, Health Visitors, Community Palliative team, community midwifery. Our GPs have a range of areas of interest including Women’s Health (coil and implant fitting), addiction, mental health, dermatology, joint injections which can form the basis of tutorials with practical experience. Our nursing team lead on areas of chronic disease including diabetes, COPD and asthma demonstrating a multidisciplinary team approach, to which our learners are part. Our trainees also get opportunities to get involved in the leadership and management, with attendance at PCN meetings and time with our Practice manager to find out more about the financial and strategic side of General Practice.

Hightown has been a training practice since 1992, and is committed to lifelong learning for all of our team. In addition to placements for medical students, GP trainees and community nurses, we encourage our staff to reach their potentials, recently supporting one of our reception team to train as an HCA, and supporting our pharmacist to be a trainer within her role. We have close links with the local training scheme, with several of our current GPs having completed training either in Banbury or with the Practice itself. Our most recent ST3 has stayed on with us as a salaried GP and these links help keep the team to stay current with training.
