GP Rotations Info

Background

We have fourteen training practices all of which have gone through a rigorous training and quality assurance process prior to being awarded training practice status by the Oxford Deanery.

All trainees spend the whole of their ST3 training time in general practice.

During ST1 or ST2 you will also spend some time in general practice. This could either be general practice alone or as part of an integrated training post. The GP practice(s) you are allocated to for ST1 or ST2 will be different to your ST3 practice so that everyone has the opportunity to work in at least two different practices.

We would encourage you to make use of all members of your team and enjoy the contributions from the entire practice team, including practice manager, administrative staff and allied health care professionals.

Top Tips from our current ST1/2s:

All the GP posts offer a good exposure to general practice, with friendly trainers and lots of opportunity for excellent training and to pick up further skills, such as joint injection.

All the supervisors are very approachable, so if in doubt about anything – clinical or otherwise- don’t be afraid to ask!

Take the opportunity to spend time with/get teaching from GPs with a special interest in the practice

Take the opportunity for exposure to extra services offered by the practice e.g. minor surgery, coil fitting.

OOH shifts

  • You need to complete 24 hours over each 6 month period (actually more like 5 months as your Ed. Supervisor meeting is the deadline)
  • Try and book early on as sometimes weekday shifts can get full quickly leaving only the weekend shifts!
  • Get on top of this early and you won’t be trying to catch up time later on before your educational supervisor meeting.

Travel expenses – there is the possibility of getting travel expenses reimbursed for home visits. See further information, transport.

Plan annual leave in advance if possible – it means that you take it all, and makes life that bit easier for the practice booking your appointments (you need to give your practice at least 6 weeks notice so they can rearrange rotas/appointments).

Don’t forget about CEPS! GP is a good place to do these
