Trainees are expected to be fully competent to work unsupervised in the Urgent and Unscheduled Care (UUSC) setting by completion of training. This now includes acute and out-of-hours (OOH) care within your GP practice.
National UUSC guidance changed in August 2019 and continues to be updated. Please review the most up-to-date guidance here:

The UUSC provider that covers the BNSSG area is Severnside Integrated Urgent Care (IUC), which is run by BrisDoc. Register with them by contacting brisdoc.gp-trainee@nhs.net

Guide for Trainees: First shifts in the out-of-hours service
Induction
There are a few essential steps that need to be undertaken by trainees before they can book shifts:
1. Complete the BrisDoc induction – at the time of writing this has been delivered to ST3s twice during the 2024/2025 academic year. It can be completed online if needed here: https://www.radar-brisdoc.co.uk/st3-induction/ Password needed for access will be emailed out or can be requested by contacting brisdoc.gp-trainee@nhs.net. Please note there is a form located on the induction page for you to self-certify completion of the induction which will be logged by the Brisdoc admin team.
2. Complete the GPR registration form and the Equality and Diversity (E&D) monitoring forms. These are usually emailed out to GPSTs directly by Brisdoc. If you have not received this then please contact brisdoc.gp-trainee@nhs.net and return the forms directly to them.
3. Set up your Rotamaster account of Brisdoc: once you have completed the above you will receive an email to your nhs.net inbox with a link to set up your Rotamaster login. Setting up the login is fairly self explanatory but will need to you to create a username and password.
Booking a shift
- Open your Brisdoc Rotamaster account https://brisdoc.rotamasterweb.co.uk/
- Click on the ‘Registrar Bookings’ icon.
- You may need to change the Rota Group (left side of the page) from “External – GP trainees” to “IUC Clinical Rota” to see the available shifts.
- Please note that your first shifts must be booked as ‘Osprey Court Training Hub GP’. These can be filtered by clicking on the ‘IUC Osprey – Training Hub’ tab. These shifts will ease you into OOH working and you’ll benefit from the direct supervision of an experienced OOH GP. Once you have built up sufficient competence and experience, you can progress to booking shifts with reduced clinical supervision.
- Each shift has a green + sign and a box in the ‘Request’ column. Select these both to add the shift to your requests, then scroll to the bottom of the page and click the “Request Selected Shifts” button.
- You should then get an email from Rotamaster confirming that you have requested the shift. You will then get further confirmation whether the request has been accepted or declined. If you do not receive confirmation then please email brisdoc.gp-trainee@nhs.net or call 0117 937 0900
IT logins
These will be arranged during your first shift. The systems in use are as follows:
- Adastra – for clinical record keeping during OOH shifts.
- EMIS – for accessing primary care records of the patients. Please note that this is a BNSSG wide EMIS login and use of all users is audited monthly.
- Synety – phone call system (no login required).
- AccuRx Fleming – web-based version of AccuRx. You can access this with an nhs.net email account. Note that there is now a text messaging system incorporated into Adastra so AccuRx is often not needed.
- Clinical Guardian – this logs your OOH sessions and the cases you’ve seen, and is a tool for learning and feedback from your supervisor following shifts. Logins are issued after your first shift. If you don’t receive login details please contact brisdoc.gp-trainee@nhs.net.
Your first shift
- Check your NHS email for confirmation ahead of the shift
- Send yourself your updated UUSC passport to your nhs.net account
- Go to Osprey Court (BrisDoc Healthcare Services, Unit 21 Osprey Court, Hawkfield Business Park, Whitchurch, Bristol, BS14 0BB) for your expected shift time. Ask to see the shift operations manager, who’ll show you around and direct you to where you’ll be based for the shift along with your supervisor and any other trainees booked onto the shift.
- Following the shift you’ll be issued a Clinical Guardian account (usually you’ll receive an email to your nhs.net inbox). This logs any cases you’ve dealt with during the shift and will prompt you to complete a reflection of the session. Once completed this can be signed off by your supervisor at a later point. On later shifts you’ll be able to complete this form in-person as you’ll already have logins.
- Afterwards, remember to create any relevant learning logs in your Fourteen Fish portfolio, link to the UUSC clinical experience group, and if needed, update these in your UUSC passport.
