Once you have secured a place on the Plymouth scheme, you will be asked to rank all the available rotations in order of preference.
Clearly, with 28+ rotations to allocate, it’s not possible to guarantee that everyone will secure one of their top choices. From 2021, allocations to individual rotations will be managed by the GP School’s central recruitment team, based solely on ranking at recruitment.
Derriford Hospital is home to most of our hospital posts, however our community-based posts are based at locations across the city.
Healthcare of the Elderly in the Community posts are based at Mount Gould Hospital.
Our Palliative Care post is based at St Luke’s Hospice.

Psychiatry posts will be based in community mental health teams.
As part of your rotation, you will also spend 6mo during either your ST1 or 2 year (depending on your allocated rotation) in a GP practice placement. Our practices cover a wide geographic area, ranging from Tavistock in West Devon, Looe, Liskeard and Callington in East Cornwall out to South Brent and Yealmpton in the South Hams, as well as practices within Plymouth itself.

Whilst we are unable to offer a placement at a specific practice of your choice in your ST1/2 year, we understand that there may be specific factors such as caring responsibilities or transport issues which mean it would be advantageous to be placed in a particular area, and we will endeavour to take this into account.
We’re sorry if some of the allocation information seems complex and at times authoritarian. It is not in our nature at VTS to be this way, however with large numbers of trainees to manage through complex rotations it is important that we have appropriate rules to guide us.
