ST3 Teaching Update 21/10/2025
Hi all,
| AM Session(trainees who commenced ST3 teaching programme in Sept 2025) | AM session (trainees who commenced ST3 teaching programme before Sept 2025) | PM Session | |
| 22 Oct | SCA Practice Session | T2GP: Positive Practice & Accepting Imperfection | ST3-Led Session |
| 29 Oct | SCA Practice Session | T2GP: Doctor-Efficient Consulting & Triage | ST3-Led Session |
For the next two week, teaching will be split.
If you started the ST3 teaching programme before Sept 2025, you’ll be in a session looking at GP consultations from a CCT-perspective.
For everyone else, you’ll be in small groups practising for SCA type cases. Please bring any materials and case ideas. It’s worth bringing a tablet/laptop so you can look up information easily during the sessions.
In the afternoon, we want you to start work on your teaching presentations which you’ll share with the whole group on 26/11 and 3/12.

Here are the guidelines for your presentations:
- Your presentation should be no more than 5 minutes in length
- If you choose to use slides, there should be no more than 7 slides, plus an introduction slide
- The topic of your presentation is up to you entirely, under the banner of “I think other GP trainees should know that…”. You can choose a medical, or non-medical topic. Here are some ideas/examples:
- NICE guidance on management of a condition
- Healthcare in the country I was born in
- My favourite foods and what health conditions they harm/help
- A case study of an interesting patient
- An audit, QIP or project
- Someone who inspires me
- How I relax after a hard day as a GP
- A journal review
- What I’ve learned from being a parent/carer myself
- Consultation skills of other professions (hairdressers, plumbers, customer service agents)
- How to get the most out of non-GP placements
- Community services in your area.
- 5 minutes is short, so pick something very specific.
- The best topics are ones that matter to you personally, so a personal insight, a memory when you suddenly realised something, or something you really care about are great starting points.
- The aim of the sessions is to get used to presenting to a group, and also how to chair sessions and give feedback.
- We’ll expect everyone to present, and there may be some prizes along the way…
Lastly, as a reminder to all resident doctors:
- We carefully craft the teaching sessions to meet curriculum areas for CCT, and are very open to feedback about changes that RDs suggest.
- Attendance at the Wednesday teaching is considered mandatory by the Deanery and ARCP panels, unless appropriate leave has been taken (eg. annual, study or sick leave)
- Your contracted salary is based on set amounts of time in clinical/educational activity. Failure to adhere to these technically constitutes NHS wage fraud, for which there are severe financial and professional consequences.
- Neither Kat, Seb, Lisa or Carole can exempt you from teaching in part or in whole; this is the remit of your ES and the ARC panel.
- Attendance means “Present at the advertised start time, engaged in the session, and departing at the advertised session end time”.
- To progress through ARCP resident doctors should display the level of professionalism required of a GP. It is our remit as educators to inform your ES/Lead Employer if we see evidence or repeated poor displays of professionalism/probity in line with our agreed professional standards.
