Alex Dombrowe

Trainer GP Practice: The Meadows Surgery

Trainer Telephone: 01444 242 860

About Trainer:

I trained at Oxford University, qualifying in 1998. After a brief spell in the North West working in A+E and completing the DTM&H at Liverpool University, I moved to Brighton in 2000 and joined the Mid Sussex VTS. Following completion of training I joined the Meadows surgery in 2003 as a full time partner. I believe that General Practice is the jewel in the NHS crown, and although there are huge challenges, believe that the future of the NHS relies on strong primary care. I value continuity of care and enjoy the daily challenge of the variety of consultations and presentations.

I am the practice respiratory lead. I also do minor surgery and joint injections. I am the practice CCG lead.

Having been an associate tutor for medical students at BSMS for several years, the next progression in teaching was postgraduate. I became a trainer in early 2016. The Meadows is a very friendly place to work with a good patient mix. I aim to create a supportive environment with exposure to the whole breadth of what General Practice has to offer. Two ST3s in recent years have stayed on as salaried colleagues.

I live in Brighton and have 2 boys. I enjoy live music and try to go to concerts – be it Metallica or Mahler – when I can. I have rowed since university and still train and race for Ardingly Rowing Club. Both my boys play rugby and I am a youth rugby coach at Hove RFC.

Susan Ferrier

Trainer GP Practice: Cuckfield MC

Trainer Telephone: 01444 458 738

About Trainer: After qualifying at St George’s Hospital Medical School in London, I worked as a junior doctor in Chertsey and Brighton. I then moved to Perth in Australia and worked in A&E and Paediatrics. Keeping up my love of the seaside I moved back to Brighton in 2010 where I undertook my GP training.

Since then I gained experience as a locum in many practices across Sussex until starting work at Cuckfield in February 2014. In April 2015 I became a Partner at the Practice and I am currently the Caldicott Guardian, Information Governance and Health & Safety Lead. In 2018 I completed a Diploma in Education and have now taken over the training role as a supervisor for new doctors training to be GPs.

I also have an interest in ENT problems and since the local PCT discouraged the use of ear syringing, have re-started the Microsuction service at the practice.

Outside of work I am a regular runner and have travelled widely and have spent time gaining experience of different health systems in Ghana, India, Peru and of course Australia.

Jo Thomson

About Jo:

I qualified from Kings College School of Medicine and Dentistry, London in 1997. I completed my VTS training in Mid Sussex and have worked in General Practice in Mid Sussex since 2001.

I have worked as a locum, a salaried GP and currently as a partner in Mid Sussex and have also spent time working as a GP in New Zealand where my family and I spent a sabbatical in 2008-10. I also work for our neighbouring Coastal West Sussex CCG as a Macmillan GP and cancer lead on one day per week.

I had a fantastic trainer who enthused me and I wanted to share some of my enthusiasm for General Practice with the next generation of GPs. I am fortunate that in our large practice of nearly 20,000 patients we have 3 trainers who support our trainees and we have a brilliant team of both clinical and non-clinical staff who are equally involved with education and training within the practice.

Outside of work I spend a lot of time on the side of rugby and netball pitches and, when time allows, in my garden and walking my dog.

About Claudia:

I have worked at Moatfield for 5 years, initially as a salaried GP, now as a partner. I trained in London (my own scheme) then worked in central London, then South London as a partner for 7 years before an interlude abroad.

I had wanted to become a GP trainer for some time and I have really enjoyed supervising Foundation doctors and trainees over the last 3 years. (I also teach medical students ). Working with 2 other trainers in the practice is very helpful and our management team are supportive of trainees.

I also work as a clinical adviser for NHS England and a GP Mentor for HEKSS. I have too many children and feel very lucky to be able to do an interesting job which is part-time. I work 3 days a week at Moatfield. Moatfield is a great place to work because it is organised and full of proactive staff trying to get things right. At Moatfield we have a great mixture of GPs with different interests and experience available as a resource. Regular clinical meetings are a great opportunity to share challenges and learn from each other.
