What to expect from your first GP Placement

Supervision

For your first 2 years you will be allocated an Educational Supervisor (ES). This is usually a GP in the practice where you will spend the GP component of ST1 or 2. During your hospital post you will also have a Clinical Supervisor (CS) This is the consultant overseeing you.

Every 6 months you meet your Educational Supervisor for a formal review (ESR), these are required to take place every 6 months regardless of whether you are full time or not.

Once a year there is a formal panel assessment of your progress (ARCP). ARCPs take place annually to review each trainee’s E-Portfolio to check progress, assessments and to ensure that the log entries are sufficient in number and depth of reflection. Those trainees who haven’t provided enough evidence will be called to a panel of Senior Trainers to recommend whether they progress to the following year or not. Other concerns from team members or supervisors can be forwarded to the panel for consideration.

High flyers may also be called to panel for commendation. We may also request a few trainees to attend ARCP panels on a random basis as part of quality assurance. ARCPs take place annually regardless of whether a trainee is working full or part time. For more information on the ARCP process please see the Peninsula Deanery website
