Hospital Posts

These are six month posts with 3 months acute medicine and 3 months care of the elderly or rheumatology.

The acute medicine is based at Wigan Infirmary and involves working in respiratory medicine, gastroenterology, cardiology or working on the medical assessment unit. The post gives excellent exposure to a wide range of common medical conditions seen in primary care. There is also the opportunity to attend a variety of out-patient clinics.

Those posted to the Medical Assessment Unit have weekly teaching and monthly x ray meetings in addition to weekly medicine teaching.

The care of the elderly posts are also based at Wigan Infirmary.  Our aging population is placing increasing demands on primary care.  Learning how to manage older patients with multiple complex medical and social problems is becoming an essential skill set for the primary care physician. You will work in a team of two GPSTs to cover the elderly medicine wards and gain a wide exposure to the elderly medicine curriculum.

The rheumatology post is based at Wrightington which has an international reputation.  The post allows one to become familiar with musculoskeletal problems and develop skills such as joint injection.  There is regular teaching on a Monday afternoon.  This includes Consultant led tutorials, x-ray teaching, journal club, case presentations, and invited speakers.

On Wednesday afternoons from 2.00pm – 5.00pm (Thursdays afternoons on last week of the month), there is protected teaching for GPST and CMT trainees except for the doctors covering admissions and emergencies .

Medical Audit meetings takes place from 2-5pm on the last Wednesday of each month and junior trainees are expected to attend.  This provides valuable education and opportunities to improve the quality of care delivered here.

The post is based at Wigan Hospital and involves combined obstetrics and gynaecology for the full six months.  There is an in-house teaching programme on a Friday afternoon (2.00pm-5.00pm). There is good exposure to gynaecological problems through outpatients and on-call work.

This is a busy paediatric post based at Wigan Infirmary that allows you to become confident in recognising the ill child and managing the common/important childhood illnesses. Trainees will work as part of a child health team and gain experience in paediatric emergency care, inpatient paediatric care, management of long term conditions and acute conditions in outpatient settings, newborn and neonatal conditions, community paediatrics and safeguarding children. The department is friendly, with supportive senior staff and consultants.  Education receives a high priority and all trainees are encouraged to participate in our weekly teaching rota.

Come and work in one of the best working environments of your career. RAEI Emergency Department is responsible for more than 90,000 patient visits a year.

It is a purpose built department with separate areas for resuscitation, majors, minor illness/injury and an exclusive paediatric emergency department. Working in ED is probably the most useful post for a GPST as it most closely reflects the situation in primary care of seeing the ‘undifferentiated’ patient who could have anything wrong and needing to make an assessment starting from scratch.  The department has consistently been nominated one of the best in the country and the best in the North West for its performance. There is a departmental induction on the start of each placement followed by consultant led service from 0800 hours to 0000 every day. Between midnight and 0800 hours the team is responsibly led by one of the ED middle grades. Daily morning handovers and a teaching board round are also conducted. There is a dedicated ED 3 hour teaching session for all junior doctors every month. The junior doctor rota has also been changed to make it more conducive for academic and social life; none of the shifts at present are longer than nine hours with no more than five day stretches.

This post is based at Atherleigh park, a bright and purpose built modern new site and the department is part of the Northwest Boroughs HealthCare NHS foundation Trust. This post has been substantially revised in the past year and now includes

• Three months ward based work at Atherleigh park (mix of general adult and Old age psychiatry)
• Three months of non-ward based work, including out-patient clinics, home visits, working with the Recovery Team, and working with the psychiatric liaison (RAID) team at WWL, Royal Albert Edward Infirmary

There is excellent educational support, with weekly afternoon protected teaching, and a weekly educational meeting with your educational supervisor.You have a weekly rota done for you by our admin team to help organise your clinical, admin and on-call work. The Trauma and Orthopaedics post focuses on management of patient with acute injuries or orthopaedic conditions presenting to Wigan Infirmary. Experience can be gained through on call, clinic and theatre sessions as well as general inpatient care.

An Orthogeriatric Consultant supports the trainees with medical management of patients with medical co-morbidities.

There will be the opportunity to gain proficiency in basic practical techniques such as fracture reduction, wound care and joint aspiration. There is also exposure to the elective Orthopaedic practice at Wrightington, a centre with an international reputation and a member of the Specialist Orthopaedic Alliance. The department aims to allow flexibility for each trainee to meet their own training goals within musculoskeletal care.
