GP Speciality Training Education Sessions – Half Day Release Course
Education sessions are designed to offer GP Speciality Registrars tuition that is relevant to their training. The specific arrangements for each group may vary from scheme to scheme.
In general education sessions, for all schemes the groups are split as follows:
- ST1 and ST2 secondary care posts
- Any GP posts in ST1 and ST2
- GP posts in ST
ST1 and ST2 during their Secondary Care (Hospital) Posts
This group is made up of GP Speciality Registrars in hospital posts from ST1 and ST2. Hospitals have agreed to release all GP Registrars for one half day per month to attend these sessions.
Topics are largely generated by the registrars themselves and are mapped to the RCGP GP Curriculum. During these sessions, we would also try to link hospital experience to General Practice or Primary Care. Sessions are flexible and include input from each group of GP Speciality Registrars. The sessions are led by Primary Care Medical Educators at various venues within each area/scheme:
- Liverpool & Birkenhead – The Women’s Hospital, Aintree Hospitals
- St Helens & Knowsley – Gregan House, The Spinney Medical Centre, St Helens, WA10 3EE
- Sefton and North Liverpool – Aintree Hospitals Postgraduate Medical Centre
- Warrington and Halton – Warrington Hospital, Postgraduate Medical Centre
Once you have been successful in applying for GP Speciality Training in our areas, you will be asked to register with the website; once registered, you will then be able to contact the relevant organiser for these sessions.
ST1 and ST2 during their GP Post
This group is made up of GP Speciality Registrars during their general practice posts in ST1 and ST2. Practices release all GP Registrars for one half day per week to attend these sessions. They attend weekly half-day sessions, topics are largely generated by the registrars themselves and are mapped to the RCGP GP Curriculum.
Sessions are flexible and include input from each group of GP Speciality Registrars. The sessions are led by a Primary Care Medical Educators at various venues within each area/scheme:

- St Helens & Knowsley – The Women’s Hospital, Aintree Hospitals
- Sefton and North Liverpool – Aintree Hospitals Postgraduate Medical Centre

GP Post in ST3
This group is comprised of GP Speciality Registrars in the ST3 year – their final year of training. Practices release all GP Registrars for one half-day per week to attend these sessions. The specific arrangements for each group may vary from scheme to scheme.
Registrars are encouraged to bring their personal experiences of General Practice to the group for discussion and shared learning. These sessions are facilitated by Training Programme Directors and/or Primary Care Medical Educators. The group is responsible for choosing its own topics, which are mapped to the GP curriculum.
