As a trainee you will have the opportunity to consult in environments with patients from inner city & rural areas, from a range of ethnic/social backgrounds, who speak a host of different languages giving you the opportunity to experience working as a GP trainee in a diverse and stimulating landscape. Our programme offers a wide range of training posts across the well respected Mid Yorkshire Hospitals, Community Services and Hospices

Things to see and do

The Hospitals and Practices in the Heart of Yorkshire GP training scheme sit around the City of Wakefield and the towns of Pontefract and Dewsbury. Whilst the proximity of the M1, A1 & M62 mean that the scheme is suitable for trainees wishing to commute, the local area has much to offer as a place to live!

Wakefield, a Cathedral City, sits at the apex of the Rhubarb triangle – known for cultivation of the large-leaved Siberian immigrant species through mysterious methods thought to involve an upturned bucket. The Hepworth gallery, Wakefield Cathedral, Wakefield Museum and Theatre Royal sit within the city, and nearby we enjoy the National Coal Mining Museum and the Yorkshire Sculpture Park. The Wakefield parkrun is a well attended weekend event.

The Town of Pontefract boasts the longest continuous racecourse in Europe, which is also home to a popular parkrun. Pontefract is also one of the few places in the UK where Liquorice can be successfully grown such that the town has donated its name to the “Pontefract Cake.”

Dewsbury is a large mill town in the Kirklees district, and the birth place of Baroness Betty Boothroyd who became the first female speaker of the house of commons. Crow nest park provides recreation activities (and a parkrun), whilst the Dewsbury Town Hall is a popular concert venue.

For those of you wishing to escape the city life, the magnificent  surrounding countryside is just touching distance away and the excellent motorway links provide easy access to the whole of Yorkshire.
