About Our Training Programme
Welcome to Wirral – a great place to train as a GP!
Wirral is a peninsula shaped by Ice Age glaciers and home to an economically diverse population of around 321,000 people. During your 18 months in primary care, you will have access to 27 GP training practices and more than 50 enthusiastic GP trainers.
Most hospital posts are based at Wirral University Teaching Hospital, including paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology, general medicine, medicine for the elderly, emergency medicine, and general surgery. We also offer psychiatry posts within Wirral, as well as oncology placements at the Clatterbridge Cancer Centre, now located in Liverpool.
As part of your first year in General Practice, you may have the opportunity to undertake an integrated training post in areas such as research, public health, university education, the drugs and alcohol service, the frailty team, the hospice, or psychiatry. These posts typically make up 40% of your week, with the remaining 60% spent in your GP practice.
We hold Half-Day Release (HDR) sessions on Thursday afternoons, usually on the first three Thursdays of each month.
These sessions offer a valuable opportunity to spend time with other doctors in training—sharing ideas, discussing challenging cases and current topics, and practising consultation skills. We also run an annual conference for trainees and regularly invite external speakers to contribute to our sessions
Feedback for the half-day release:

“Covers a wide range of topics and is trainee-based, so allows us to identify any lack of our knowledge to enable us to self learn and fill in the gaps.”

“I thoroughly enjoyed the group – all members would participate equally and would support other members if they were struggling with something, either personal or work-related. It was a good environment to learn and receive support – it helped to start GP training with such a friendly and supportive group.”

“Half-day release is a kind of opportunity to breathe some fresh air during the busy routine of work, especially when we are working in the hospital. We can share our learning, our clinical confusions, and our personal experiences in different jobs with our colleagues there. On the other hand, we had some good lectures from experts from different fields, we had our topic-related sessions where we discussed some good cases & topics which are helpful for exam preparations as well.”
