About Our Training Programme
Welcome to Wirral – a great place to train to be a GP! Wirral is a peninsula, carved by ice age glaciers and home to an economically diverse population of 321 000 people. For your 18 months in primary care we have 27 GP training practices and more than 50 keen GP trainers. Most of the hospital posts are based at Wirral University Teaching Hospital – these include paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology, general medicine, medicine for the elderly, emergency medicine and general surgery. We also have posts in psychiatry based in Wirral and posts in oncology at Clatterbridge Cancer Centre. As part of a 6 month primary care attachment there is the option to spend 50% of the time in the local St. Johns Hospice.
Because of Covid-19 precautions we have suspended our usual Thursday afternoon face-to-face half day release educational meetings and replaced them with weekly meetings using Video and Audio conferencing technology. When Health Education England advise us that it is safe to return to normal interactive meetings in the Education Centre at Arrowe Park Hospital we will do so. Feedback for the half day release:
“Covers wide range of topics and is trainee based so allows us to identify any lack of our knowledge to enable us to self learn and fill in the gaps.”
“I thoroughly enjoyed the group – all members would participate equally and would support other members if they were struggling with something either personal or work related. It was a good environment to learn and receive support – it helped to start GP training with such a friendly and supportive group.”
“Very good learning opportunity, … very relevant to GP -Good exposure to a wide range of learning tools and teaching techniques -Good experience of working as a group”
“Helped improve my confidence at speaking in front of people”
“Half day release is a kind of opportunity to breathe some fresh air during the busy rota of the work, especially when we are working in the hospital. We can share our learning, our clinical confusions, our personal experiences in different jobs with our colleagues there. On the other hand we had some good lectures from experts from different fields, we had our topic related sessions where we discussed some good cases & topics which are helpful for exam preparations as well.”
“Sessions have been curriculum focussed”
