{"id":4369,"date":"2021-01-27T09:35:57","date_gmt":"2021-01-27T09:35:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/gp-training.hee.nhs.uk\/reading\/?page_id=4369"},"modified":"2026-03-16T14:36:52","modified_gmt":"2026-03-16T14:36:52","slug":"st3-teaching","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/gp-training.hee.nhs.uk\/reading\/the-scheme\/day-release\/st3-teaching\/","title":{"rendered":"ST3 teaching"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-nhsblocks-panel1 nhsuk-panel is-style-panel-with-label\"><h3><strong>Structure<\/strong><\/h3><div class=\"paneltext\">\n<p>ST3s have a half day of training on Tuesday mornings.&nbsp; Usually this consists of formal teaching.&nbsp; The teaching program has been carefully compiled to address the&nbsp; RCGP curriculum using local specialist and GP expertise.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/gp-training.hee.nhs.uk\/reading\/vts-calendar\/\">calendar<\/a>&nbsp;should always be viewed for up to date information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During this year there is&nbsp;an emphasis on consultation skills and preparation for the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rcgp.org.uk\/mrcgp-exams\/simulated-consultation-assessment\">SCA.<\/a>&nbsp; We run a three year consultation skills course that runs throughout your ST1,2 and 3 years to help you to prepare for this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You will also spend time preparing for life as an independent GP.\u00a0\u00a0 Sessions include techniques for handling \u201cdifficult consultations\u201d , financial, legal and employment matters, careers options, CV and interview skills.\u00a0 We also run an introductory day focusing on getting to know each other and developing skills required to work with colleagues in practice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We use a wide range of teaching methods for example small group work, formal lectures, debate, discussion, practical exercises and role play with actors. <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-nhsblocks-panel1 nhsuk-panel is-style-panel-with-label\"><h3><strong>Venue<\/strong><\/h3><div class=\"paneltext\">\n<p>VTS Teaching is usually in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.readinghockeyclub.org.uk\/contact\">Reading Hockey Club <\/a>unless stated otherwise on the timetable.&nbsp; Sometimes there will be sessions arranged by the deanery, these are usually remote and details will be sent to you by the deanery. Please ensure you arrive promptly as teaching starts at 0930.  There is plenty of free parking on site.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-nhsblocks-panel1 nhsuk-panel is-style-panel-with-label\"><h3><strong>Attendance<\/strong><\/h3><div class=\"paneltext\">\n<p>Attendance at teaching is very important and all of our practices release trainees for teaching on a Tuesday.&nbsp; The single lead employer requires that we keep records of your attendance and report&nbsp;<strong>all<\/strong>&nbsp;absences to them.&nbsp; We therefore require that you fill in a feedback and attendance form for&nbsp;<strong>every<\/strong>&nbsp;missed session.  These are embedded on the VTS calendar within the description of each session.
