{"id":326,"date":"2013-11-30T14:46:48","date_gmt":"2013-11-30T14:46:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.readingvts.org\/?page_id=326"},"modified":"2026-03-16T16:47:24","modified_gmt":"2026-03-16T16:47:24","slug":"types-of-leave","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/gp-training.hee.nhs.uk\/reading\/trainees\/types-of-leave\/","title":{"rendered":"Types of Leave"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-nhsblocks-panel1 nhsuk-panel is-style-panel-with-label\"><h3>Annual Leave<\/h3><div class=\"paneltext\">\n<p>Annual Leave depends on your time in NHS Employment &#8211; please contact the Single Lead Employer to confirm your allowance and any restrictions on when leave can be taken. You must also inform your placements of your intention to take A\/L, and consult with them with regard to their notice requirement as it may not be possible if timescales do not allow.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-nhsblocks-panel1 nhsuk-panel is-style-panel-with-label\"><h3>Study Leave<\/h3><div class=\"paneltext\">\n<p> It is important to refer to the <a href=\"https:\/\/thamesvalley.hee.nhs.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2024\/12\/study-leave-.pdf\">GP school study leave policy<\/a> before booking leave and to liaise with your post.  Study leave is discretionary and relies on clear demonstration of learning goals, negotiation with your supervisor and relevance to GP training.  <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-nhsblocks-panel1 nhsuk-panel is-style-panel-with-label\"><h3>Sick leave<\/h3><div class=\"paneltext\">\n<p>If you are not fit to fulfil your normal working duties you should take sick leave which will be paid in accordance with standard NHS policy as detailed in your contract of employment. You should let your practice \/ post know as early as possible that you are sick and will not be able to come to work. If you are sick on a Tuesday and missing VTS teaching please complete the attendance form so that we know why you are off.  This can be found embedded on the calendar entry for that teaching session.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the first working week you are sick you should fill in a self certification form, after this you will require a sick note from your own GP or specialist. These certificates need to be shared with your post, the tPDs and the single lead employer.  The deanery will also need to be informed by you that you have been off sick as this has implications for your training time.  (Time off in addition to annual leave and study leave over&nbsp;14&nbsp;days&nbsp;in&nbsp;a full ST&nbsp;year may need to be made up at the end of your training programme). This is to ensure that you have enough training time to achieve the required competencies. Such time off will include sick leave, unpaid leave, compassionate leave, leave for childcare etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/leademployer.merseywestlancs.nhs.uk\/absence-support\">Absence support and information for Resident Doctors<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/leademployer.merseywestlancs.nhs.uk\/attendance-management--absence\">Guidance for host employers for absence reporting and management<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-nhsblocks-panel1 nhsuk-panel is-style-panel-with-label\"><h3>Parental Leave<\/h3><div class=\"paneltext\">\n<p id=\"block-03de7782-2f66-41dc-aca6-cecb1dce6b51\"><br>If you are taking parental leave please inform the tPDS, GP school, Lead employer, current and future posts. We appreciate as much notice as possible both for future planning and so that we can support you.\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-03de7782-2f66-41dc-aca6-cecb1dce6b51\">If you are pregnant please let us know your EDD, the date you plan to start your maternity leave, the date you plan to return and whether you plan to work full or part time on your return (we understand that these timings may change).\u00a0 Under normal circumstances you should have informed us by the end of the 15th week prior to the expected\u00a0week of delivery\u00a0or the date you want to start maternity leave if this is earlier.\u00a0 You can start your maternity leave any time after the beginning of the 11th week before the baby is due.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-9f844f10-ed29-4ae7-8561-8953e8430d37\">If you are taking maternity leave you will be given the opportunity to complete your training.\u00a0 However since you will have become &#8220;out of synch&#8221; with your originally planned rotation\u00a0we cannot guarantee that\u00a0you\u00a0will return to the same practice where you were working previously or your exact choice of return date- please discus your plans for return with your educational supervisor and programme directors as soon as possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-79310855-661e-4731-9687-795ad1742448\">Fathers are entitled to  paternity leave- again please discus this with your educational supervisor, practice manager and programme directors as soon as possible.\u00a0 Please be aware that if this takes your total leave in the year other than study and annual leave over the 2 week threshold you will be required to extend your training to make up these days- use the following chart to keep track of your leave of various types.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/leademployer.merseywestlancs.nhs.uk\/online-policies?policy=14\">SLE support for new parents<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thamesvalley.hee.nhs.uk\/gp-training\/training-programme\/\">Application for less than full time training (HETV\u00a0 links and resources)<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul id=\"block-88846b07-8d92-49ac-b2f9-12e430c309a1\" class=\"wp-block-list\"><\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"","protected":false},"author":3,"featured_media":0,"parent":4194,"menu_order":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","template":"","meta":{"rating_form_position":"","rating_results_position":"","mr_structured_data_type":"","footnotes":"","_links_to":"","_links_to_target":""},"class_list":["post-326","page","type-page","status-publish","hentry"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.3 -
