The MRCGP examination is the single training and assessment system for UK trained doctors wishing to obtain a CCT (Certificate of Completion of Training) in General Practice. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The MRCGP assessments are mapped to the GP curriculum and address the wide-ranging knowledge, clinical skills and communication skills required for a doctor to be deemed competent to enter independent practice in the United Kingdom. Satisfactory completion of MRCGP is a pre-requisite for the issue of a CCT in general practice and confirms eligibility for full membership of the RCGP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The integrated examination comprises three separate components: the Applied Knowledge Test (AKT)<\/a>, Recorded Consultation Assessment (RCA)<\/a> and Workplace Based Assessment (WPBA)<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The RCGP website<\/a> has up-to-date information on all aspects of the MRCGP examination<\/a>, including examination application and assessment dates. It is worthwhile checking this regularly. Our Resource page<\/a> also has further useful information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Applied Knowledge Test (AKT)<\/h3>
\n

3 hour multiple choice test of 200 questions. It is computer based and you take it at one of 150 Pearson VUE test centres, where the UK driving theory tests currently take place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Approximately 80% of questions will be on clinical medicine, 10% on critical appraisal and evidence based medicine, and 10% on health informatics, management and administration.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can take the AKT in ST2 or 3; you are not allowed to sit it in ST1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/a>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Simulated Consultation Assessment (SCA)<\/h3>
\n

The SCA is a permanent replacement for the Consultation Skills Assessment (CSA) and Remote Consultation Assessment (RCA). The SCA aims to be reflective of real-life general practice, and measure the skills required for competent consulting.\u00a0This exam aims to test various aspects of General Practice through virtual consultations taken live. The areas tested include clinical, practical, communication and professional skills related to General Practice.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GP Specialist Trainees will be eligible to take the SCA when they are within 12 months of the expected date of completing their training. Therefore, the SCA will be sat during the ST3 year or beyond of training. RCGP is currently providing 9 sittings of the SCA, available throughout the year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SCA is delivered through an online exam platform, from a local GP practice.\u00a0It consists of 12 simulated, live consultations with a role-player which are assessed remotely by an assessor. Each case is 12 minutes long. There will be 3 minutes reading time between cases.\u00a0The cases can be either video or telephone consultations. Role-players will usually be playing patients directly, however there may be cases with parents, carers or other healthcare professionals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Workplace Based Assessments (WPBA)<\/h3>

Continuous assessment throughout training made up of case based discussions (CbD), consultation observation tool (COT) when in GP and mini clinical evaluation exercise (Mini-CEX) when in hospital posts, directly observed clinical procedures (DOPs), multi source feedback (MSF) and patient satisfaction questionnaires (PSQs). Prescribing reviews, quality improvement audits and projects are also mandated. These assessments are recorded in your e-portfolio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You are also required to make \u2018learning log\u2019 entries on your e-portfolio which is reflective writing to help you think deeply about what you\u2019ve been learning or experiencing and to keep an active Professional Development Plan (PDP) on your e-portfolio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/a>\n<\/div><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
