Communication Skills<\/h1>

Our approach to developing those key skills…<\/p><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/section>\n\n\n\n

Throughout your three years on the scheme, we aim to equip you with the skills you will need firstly to pass your CSA and then to spend a professional lifetime consulting effectively.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

We will do this by using a semi-structured programme that aims to develop your skills as you go along. We will use your own experiences through video, discussion, rehearsal of techniques in small groups, and other methods as appropriate. This is the best way to develop, through \u201cdoing and reviewing\u201d. Experience alone is not a good teacher I\u2019m afraid.<\/p>\n

The programme outline is as follows:<\/p>\n

In ST1:<\/strong><\/p>\n

    \n
  • Why bother learning communication skills?<\/li>\n
  • First introduction to CSA.<\/li>\n
  • Consultation models.<\/li>\n
  • Introduction to the Cambridge\/ Calgary method<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    \u00a0And continuing into ST2 <\/strong>we will run specific sessions on:<\/p>\n

      \n
    • Initiating the consultation<\/li>\n
    • Gathering information and building rapport<\/li>\n
    • Explaining\/ planning and closing the consultation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      During these and other sessions as we go along we aim to equip you with the following \u201cmicroskills\u201d:<\/p>\n

      • Initiating the consultation<\/li>\n
      • Active listening<\/li>\n
      • Empathy and validation<\/li>\n
      • Agenda Setting<\/li>\n
      • Eliciting ideas, concerns and expectations<\/li>\n
      • Responding to cues<\/li>\n
      • Signposting<\/li>\n
      • Explaining and planning<\/li>\n
      • Summarising<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        In ST3:<\/strong><\/p>\n

        • Dealing with challenging patients<\/li>\n
        • Dealing with conflict<\/li>\n
        • Coaching\/ Motivational interviewing<\/li>\n
        • Transactional Analysis<\/li>\n
        • Neuro Linguistic programming<\/li>\n
        • Telephone consulting<\/li>\n
        • Balint groups<\/li>\n
