Job Summary<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Wide ranging experience of paediatrics including children’s ward, paediatric clinics and baby clinics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the JR it may also includes some time on SBCU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Horton General Hospital, Banbury<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One post is based at John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shift pattern (lates\/nights\/weekends etc)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Banbury:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Standard working day 9am \u2013 5pm (handovers 9am and 4.30pm)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Long shift 9am – 8pm once a week<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Late shift 1pm \u2013 9pm (handover) \u2013 one week in 8<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nights \u2013 9pm to 9am \u2013 approximately once every 8 weeks. Nights are split into 4 nights and 3 nights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Oxford:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Standard working day 8.30am \u2013 5.30pm. Evening shifts 4.30pm – 9.30pm. Paediatric ED shift 4pm – 11pm<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Weekend on call shifts 8.30am to 9.30pm<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nights 9pm to 9.30 am.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Top tips for extra opportunities (e.g. teaching \/ skills )<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Regular teaching programme (consultant led, trainee led, x-ray, case presentations). Lots of bedside teaching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Banbury <\/strong>– Opportunities to attend outpatients clinics – a whole week of clinics is part of the rota but which clinics you attend need to be self organised<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Oxford<\/strong> – opportunities to attend clinics when wards well staffed so be organised<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Oxford <\/strong>– one week of community of paediatrics, 3 days in neonatology including baby check clinics<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Highlights<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
  • Great grounding in general paediatrics<\/li>
  • Opportunities to see a comprehensive range of paediatrics \u2013 very relevant to front line GP<\/li>
  • Very senior led and lots of timetabled handover time<\/li>
  • You learn something new every day. See and do as much as you are able to.<\/li>
  • Good supportive team<\/li>
  • Really friendly unit<\/li>
  • Very approachable consultants<\/li>
  • Lovely nursing team<\/li>
  • Lots of teaching both formal and informal<\/li>
  • Oxford – the specialty clinics are good and usually can be attended as the specialties usually only have a handful of patients on the ward<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    Challenges<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
    • At Banbury – No middle grade doctors, entirely consultant led<\/li>
    • Winter can be busy, but still manageable<\/li>
    • Steep learning curve in case of babies<\/li>
    • Fixed rota makes swaps and study leave challenging at times<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n
