{"id":2155,"date":"2021-01-25T15:55:31","date_gmt":"2021-01-25T15:55:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/gp-training.hee.nhs.uk\/blackpool\/?page_id=2155"},"modified":"2021-01-26T12:05:08","modified_gmt":"2021-01-26T12:05:08","slug":"general-surgery","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/gp-training.hee.nhs.uk\/blackpool\/doctors-in-training\/foundation-trainees\/programme\/general-surgery\/","title":{"rendered":"General Surgery"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bfwh.nhs.uk\/our-services\/hospital-services\/day-surgery\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">General Surgery<\/a>\u00a0is a busy department with over 2,300 elective admissions every year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The workload in the Directorate consists of:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Elective operations: 4,000<\/li><li>Day case operations: 1,800<\/li><li>Emergency operations: 1,400 \u2013 making it a total of over 7,200 cases giving ample opportunity to gain valuable experience.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The general surgical directorate sub \u2013 specialises in :<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Breast &amp; Endocrine<\/li><li>GI Surgery<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>There are weekly multi-disciplinary meetings in Breast &amp; Colorectal surgery. There is also a keen interest in Laparoscopic Surgery with nearly 70% of colonic resections being completed laparoscopically<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Weekly meetings are also held with Radiologists in General surgery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The trainee will provide a ward based care encouraging reflective practice on the management of patients under guidance from Consultants and middle grade staff. They participate on a 12hr shift system of emergency cover.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nurse Specialists help with routine clerking, freeing up time for the trainee to deal with the management of patients under their care.The working day starts with a SpR led ward rounds at 8am. There is a system of surgeon on the week where a consultant surgeon will do a ward round every morning reviewing all acute admissions. This is an important learning opportunity.There is an acute pain team with a consultant ward rounds every day in the surgical high care unit. You will remain responsible for the patients admitted to the surgical high care under guidance from trainers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>During the period in General Surgery the trainee will have the opportunity to gain experience in:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Venous cannulation &amp; setting up of infusion<\/li><li>The principle of post-operative pain control, understand the analgesic ladder<\/li><li>Principles of fluid balance<\/li><li>Principles of critical care<\/li><li>Catheterisation of patients<\/li><li>Nasogastric tube intubation<\/li><li>Nutritional needs of patients<\/li><li>The role of the Early Warning Scoring System<\/li><li>Simple operations and procedures<\/li><li>Suture skin wounds<\/li><li>Outpatient clinics enabling development of communication skills<\/li><li>Decision making during \u2018post take\u2019 ward rounds<\/li><li>Attendance at the mandatory\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gp-training.hee.nhs.uk\/blackpool\/doctors-in-training\/foundation-trainees\/teaching\/\">Foundation Teaching Programme<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The Basic Surgical Skills Course of the RCSE is run in the hospital on an annual basis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-nhsblocks-panel1 nhsuk-panel is-style-panel-with-label\"><h3>Urology<\/h3><div class=\"paneltext\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bfwh.nhs.uk\/our-services\/hospital-services\/urology\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Urology<\/a>\u00a0is a busy specialty with elective admissions each year. There are 4 Consultant Urologists and 3 Senior Urologists who sub-specialise in urodynamics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>FY1 Trainees will have the opportunity to gain experience in:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Catheterization of the patient<\/li><li>Simple operations<\/li><li>Venous cannulation and setting up of infusion.<\/li><li>Daily post-take ward rounds with senior Urologists<\/li><li>Teaching ward rounds<\/li><li>Directorate audit meetings<\/li><li>Surgical on call shift system<\/li><li>Attendance at the mandatory\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gp-training.hee.nhs.uk\/blackpool\/doctors-in-training\/foundation-trainees\/teaching\/\">Foundation Teaching Programme<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<a class=\"wp-block-nhsblocks-nhsbutton alignright nhsuk-button\"><\/a>\n<\/div><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p class=\"nhsuk-card__description\">General Surgery\u00a0is a busy department with over 2,300 elective admissions every year.
